GPS is among the best tools readily available. Most are good to within 12 ft or so.

My experience is that mile markers are generally very accurate. I would put almost an equal faith in both mile markers and GPS.

I broke my UG and don't remember if the increment is as low as 0.1%, but I would guess that it is. That level of error in 1 mile is equal to 5.28 feet (5280 * .001)
