I had this setup when I worked midnights with my programable stat. I think i had it set to something like 60 durning the day (when I'm home) and 40 at night. It was never super cold really, so when I got home it was high 40s to 50s. Down side to my situation, trailer houses suck, and you can feel the wind blow though. I have to fix that some time when it is warm.

I did have my pipes freeze with the freeze and thaw method due to someone being stupid when they setup the water lines right next to the skirting.
