This is something me and my wife do regularly.

There are a couple places that even have 100 gallon limits on gasoline with discount (Casey's General Store used to with Hyvee discount...but my wife told me they changed that to 40 gallons recently. Murphy's gas station is 50 gallons with discount I think). I just fill up the auxiliary tank on the pickup when I get a good deal.

Between grocery discount ($0.75-1.00), the 5% credit card cash back, and combining trips I save a lot of money filling up once and pumping it into my cars/motorcycles/4-wheelers/tractors/generators/etc at home. Depending on the station, you usually get a free soda/burger and sometimes a free car wash for spending over $150 at the pump.

As long as you aren't buying a bunch of junk food you weren't planning to AND you pay off the credit card before interest is due, this is a legitimate way to save a couple hundred dollars a year on gas/diesel.
