20 liters is huge! For this sort of application, at least. A camping size backpack is reasonable for camping, but not for taking a motorcycle out- unless you're going straight to the grocery store and back. For being out and about and simply wanting to have a way to carry some stuff 20l is almost too big, the size of a school backpack.
An old style buttpack holds a bunch and it's only 7 liters, and my Camelback MULE is less than 9. The 7 liter was great for years, but we wore gear differently in the desert so I had to buy something else. With that little Camelbak I'd have all sorts of stuff with me short of overnighting, and still only have a small bag that wasn't cumbersome. I still use it.
Shaped panels to give a small pack an aero shape is a good idea.
