Sounds like it might be the evap system leaking little. It is for emissions. I'm not super experienced but I have spent probably scores of hours wort of time under my Civic and I have never yet smelled gasoline unless I was disconnecting fuel lines... so I don't think the gas smell you encountered today is normal. Suspect evaporative emissions system.
