It's not a case of only one or the other, you know. They are independent.
Exactly why do you think no one is working on the New Mexico gas thing? This is the way science works: you find something surprising, you tell people about it, then later on someone - maybe you, maybe someone else - discovers more, others start to fix the problem if it needs fixing. Life isn't an effing TV show, or even a movie, where everything is neatly wrapped up just in time for the closing credits to roll.
Maybe you think they should have done some sort of cover-up instead?
