Electric overdrive? I think that might be the same one that Volvo used on their rear drive "red block" 2.3 liter 4 cyl engines. Their 240, 740 and 940 series cars. I drove them for many years, and wrenched them too.

Standards and auto's had the OD units. A solenoid on the side of the OD unit put it into action. Note: the solenoid takes a good amount of current. If you're conserving electrical, find out how much it draws. Or maybe activate/deactivate it with a cable instead, if you're into hacking into it. I have no idea how feasible that is.
