There were outrageous columns in the car magazines when air bags were introduced. Something about air bags going off when the car went over railroad tracks. Nobody smokes a pipe in the car anymore. It is one thing to win a DARPA contest and quite another to put 50 million reliable units on the road. I put safety and control over convenience. I only use the cruise control on limited access highways. On hilly country roads the lag time is too long, one must anticipate the grade and accelerate out of a turn. As for privacy and control one need only spoof the sensors to fool the system. I decide what is appropriate technology for myself and my family. Silly politicians, socialism is for kids.
