Diesel engines are not what you think. They already "lean burn" by design. Altering the quantity of fueling will undoubtedly affect how it performs, but will probably not help fuel economy. This is because fuel mileage is not about how much fuel you inject per cycle, but how efficiently that fuel is converted to mechanical force (per cycle).
