This thread makes me wonder about some sort of manually activated VTEC, with the normal cam being very economical and the additional cam giving acceleration power. But I guess VTEC-e is about the same thing. Just make "2-cylinder" the default, and "4-cylinder" the addition.
It might be easier and more effective to build up a low-displacement 4-cylinder with VTEC than it would be to engineer a deactivation system. Maybe a custom crankshaft that limits the range of the piston, and an economy cam that matches the right amount of explosive air to the new displacement... Right? I'm no engineer...
