Finding an emissions-certified small engine with 2 cylinders that could still move a car decently is not so easy. Anyway, recently I have been thinking about fitting a Harley-Davidson engine into a Subaru Impreza...

No, a smaller engine with a reasonable number of cylinders. E.g. replace a 2.0 4 banger with a 1.3 ?

Where to find a 1.3L engine with less than 4 cylinders? Right now I can only think about motorcycles.

I think he meant WITH 4 cylinders... or maybe three!

This thread makes me wonder about some sort of manually activated VTEC, with the normal cam being very economical and the additional cam giving acceleration power. But I guess VTEC-e is about the same thing. Just make "2-cylinder" the default, and "4-cylinder" the addition.

It might be easier and more effective to build up a low-displacement 4-cylinder with VTEC than it would be to engineer a deactivation system. Maybe a custom crankshaft that limits the range of the piston, and an economy cam that matches the right amount of explosive air to the new displacement... Right? I'm no engineer...

The 2003-2005 Honda Civic Hybrid is a 1.3L lean burn. Just pull off the hybrid stator.

Seems like building a injector/timing map for that would be way easier than trying to halve a 2+L engine.

1.0L and 1.2L, but still no 1.3L. Anyway, Nissan has an interesting version of its 3-cyl 1.2L fitted with a supercharger...
