All of Newtonsfirstlaw's thread starting comments are right on.

The difference in fuel economy and risk of death in a collision between 45mph and 75 mph are HUGE.

I don't think that a "turtle parade" on the interstate would be the best thing, but I do like the concept of a "Green Lane". Sort of a slow-and-steady carpool lane would be great.

On the interstate, as long as you are in the slow lane, and people can pass you, I have no problem driving a little slower (55 not 40!)

Lately I have been doing lots of driving on country roads at 45 mph with not too many stop signs. Fuel economy is good and it's a lot less stressful than being on the interstate.

I also like the "I don't speed to red lights" bumper sticker idea. I always just let off the gas when I am getting anywhere close to a red light, most of the time, the light turns green before I coast up to light and I just roll right through. Sure beats burning gas to the light, wasting brake pads, and then wasting gas again to pull away.

You can do the same thing by letting off the gas when exiting the interstate. There is always a stop sign or traffic light at the end, so why bother to speed to it?
