I met up with another Metro owner over the weekend. I got to drive her convertible and noticed that it had quite a bit more low rpm pep than mine did. So, I figured I'd start looking for possible reasons why. The first test I did was a compression test... sadly, this explains it.

cylinder #1

cylinder #2

cylinder #3

So, I have to figure out what I want to do now. I'll likely keep driving it in the mean time. I wouldn't mind rebuilding it, but I need another vehicle to drive in the mean time. Perhaps dropping a salvage yard engine in would be a good idea, but who knows about the compression on it. My engine only has 127k miles on it. I'm definitely going to have to do some rust work if I'm going to keep it... time to think.
