They immediately went to 1000' racing after Scott Kalitta was killed....he had an engine explosion near the finish line and the chutes did not (possibly burned too bad too quickly) deploy and he had a horrific crash AFTER the shut down area....bad place for a cement wall!
Some of the shut down areas are 1/4 of a mile and have sand traps and or netting after that....even if he held a 240 mph average speed after the explosion there would have been only 3.75 seconds left before he met that wall. They are still running over 300 mph now at 1000' and I might be dumb, but I know I am smarter than most people, the same engine explosion on the same track would only give him maybe another 1 second to get stopped.
A more intelligent precaution would be more safety net useage like on aircraft carriers.
