Did you tighten up the spark plugs? Loose plugs seem common on 1st gens.
They should not be overtightened, maybe that's why they get undertightened?
I had a rough/erratic/non idling Virago which was caused by a loose plug (among other things).
Tightened it up, and Presto! Slightly less disastrous.
