I have the blessing/curse of not having a rocker arm setup. The cam spins and pushes down directly on the lifter and valve.
Think Prius engine when you see/hear Atkinson cycle. Here is a decent definition:

Atkinson uses slightly different timing for valve opening and closing events -- in particular, the intake valve stays open as the compression stroke begins. This difference results in increased fuel efficiency, but decreased peak power.
