The comparison here was between a Mirage and an Elio, not between a Mirage and Elio+Hyundai, and the Mirage can carry 5 people where the Elio can't--which is an important consideration for potential buyers, who historically have not gravitated toward small, efficient two-seat vehicles at least partially because of the need to keep a second vehicle on hand. For example, Honda projected that it would sell 45,000 first-gen Insights, and in reality it sold just 17,000. If the Elio ever comes to market (and I very much doubt it will), the car is quirky enough that I wouldn't be surprised if the difference between the rosy projected sales numbers of 250,000/year and real sales is a larger ratio than it was for the Insight.
