Cylinder Deactivation, Stand alone managment on GM D.O.D. motors?

I'm planning on swapping in a newer (2008ish) GM V8 engine into an older car. Many of the engines I'm looking at have the ability to shut down 4 of the cylinders (displacement on demand/active fuel management, DOD/AFM). Just wondering if it's possible/has anyone managed to take advantage of that feature using a stand alone engine control system such as megasquirt or the like. The motor will be mated to a manual transmission and installed in a vehicle that weighs 3000lbs.
Thanks
