Cylinder Deactivation, Stand alone managment on GM D.O.D. motors?

I'm planning on swapping in a newer (2008ish) GM V8 engine into an older car. Many of the engines I'm looking at have the ability to shut down 4 of the cylinders (displacement on demand/active fuel management, DOD/AFM). Just wondering if it's possible/has anyone managed to take advantage of that feature using a stand alone engine control system such as megasquirt or the like. The motor will be mated to a manual transmission and installed in a vehicle that weighs 3000lbs.
Thanks

I have heard that technology creates longevity issues. I imagine that if the gearing is appropriate, the additional gains from dod would be minimal.

It works well on my 2008 5.7 Chrysler with 150,000 miles on it. I just wish you could lock it in. The slightest increase in throttle kicks it off. I want it to stay on up until about 1/2 or 3/4 throttle. The aftermarket mpg monitors can't seem to figure out correct readings but the on board long term mpg gauge seems to keep accurate numbers. It's not a miracle but it certainly increases mpg yet still has plenty of power when you want it.

Correct. It is a known issue on gms that can cause lifter failure, camshaft failure, or even engine failure in extreme cases. Dod should be avoided on gm vehicles
