Fat Charlie makes the same point that is made throughout this thread.

But let's review:
the goal of driving is "eyes on the road". they preached that back when I took driver's ed.
Note all the new laws about texting.
Instrument clusters are set up so you are looking IN FRONT of you and out the window.
You are obviously 'monitoring' you scangauge. THe lower you look the longer it takes for your eyes to get back up.
Also, your eyes are adjusting form a close up, lower darker environment to a bright distance when you do look up.

Much like K&N filters and H20 injection, you can do what you want. But it is still a bad location.
