As we have discussed before, it does not make sense, but instead of simply changing lanes and maintaining their faster speeds, drivers often tailgate and perhaps do other rude things, expecting that to "accomplish" something. I change lanes to allow someone to pass if I can, but if I cannot, and the vehicle behind me tailgates, I just maintain my speed. However, if they fill my rear view mirror, I generally coast until they go around.

I have had people shout "You did that just to bother me!"

You're so vain...

I imagine that many times people tailgate me and think or perhaps actually shout "Why won't he speed up?! Can't he see me tailgating him?! He must be doing this to make me mad!"

Pulse and glide, on the other hand. Instead of maintaining a constant speed (on level ground, without a stop ahead), you drive even slower, but finally start accelerating, and right when they think you are going to drive the speed they want, you slow down again!

I do not always pulse-and-glide, but when I do, it is in very light traffic.
