Yes, VW is like a lot of car companies in this regard. The difference now is that VW has dug a deep diesel hole for themselves, and they have said that it will be electric cars that will get them out of that hole. They have said recently that they will build 30 EV models by 2025.

And speaking of the XL1, VW could design a gasoline burning, steel (or aluminum) version, and an all electric version, and sell it for an affordable price.

So, maybe this is the thing that salvages Edison2? VW is certainly more likely to work with Oliver Kuttner now, than they were last year.
