For a project nearing the 90-years old milestone, it's quite impressive that the Beetle's basic concept remains quite up-to-date. Body-on-platform allows relatively cheap repairs and mods that an unibody wouldn't, while the rear engine and RWD combo provides it some off-road ability that is still better than many modern SUVs. Even though it lacks many modern comfort and safety features (that could eventually be retrofitted in despite of the weight penalty) and its powertrain also has some limitations, nobody can deny the Beetle is even more important in a worldwide basis than the Ford Model T.
