Yeah, the joints hold together Okay, but it's flexible enough that the shiny new paint has been 'beat about the head and shoulders'.

I went upriver today and visited with my 'hoard'. It's down to the '58 VW Baja Beetle and a pile of wheels and tires.

For a project nearing the 90-years old milestone, it's quite impressive that the Beetle's basic concept remains quite up-to-date. Body-on-platform allows relatively cheap repairs and mods that an unibody wouldn't, while the rear engine and RWD combo provides it some off-road ability that is still better than many modern SUVs. Even though it lacks many modern comfort and safety features (that could eventually be retrofitted in despite of the weight penalty) and its powertrain also has some limitations, nobody can deny the Beetle is even more important in a worldwide basis than the Ford Model T.

What are those slots just forward of the doors? Turn indicator flags that pop out?

Good on you. Looks like there wasn't much left of that one anyways.

I've gone the other way.

Now that I'm settled into my new house, I've picked up two 'new' vehicles in the last couple weeks, and two more in the works...

Xringer -- Yes, semaphores. It seems there is a problem putting them on the door post on a convertible. There would be a problem seeing a right turn signal from the left front.

That's the Hebmuller. The best VW — the Corvette of Germany in 1950. Numbers are low because the factory burnt down. That red (Koral Rot) is the only shade of red I care for.

My 1958 sedan is of Canadian manufacture. Where US 58s had the 'peanut' fender-top turn signals, Canadians had the semaphores and the big back window. The semaphore pockets are there but the mechanism is missing. I'd eventually fill them with push button for an entry/car alarm feature. The EV conversion comes first.

cRiPpLe_rOoStEr -- You are correct, sir. The human body and roads (Autobahns, anyone?) haven't changed, but manufacturing has. Apparently there is a problem there, I'm not sure what, maybe the crimped-over panel edges in the rain gutter or something.

And the laws. "Thou shalt not have a windshield you can reach to wipe clean, so we can put a Takata-bomb in front of you."

My daughter will be driving soon (Yikes!) so my wife found a clean S10 (4cyl/auto ext cab w/ canopy) for about scrap value due to a bad rod knock. We decided to limp it home since we bought it on our way home from camping.

Got halfway home and suffered a major oil pan failure (It failed to hold the bits inside when the engine let go...)

Then I found an electrical contractor selling a beat up S10 with only 80k miles. I'll combine the best parts of both and have a nice little truck for about $1000 total.

My Civic is dying a slow death and needs to be replaced soon. Negotiating with my wife to figure out what that will look like. I want a new turbo Camaro, she points at a brand new BMW M3 and says get one of those... but then says I only have $8000 to spend. Negotiations could take a while....

Finally, my aunt is the original owner of a '67 Mustang. She's planning to sell and I think it would be a shame for it to be sold outside the family. I'm not sure how I'll afford it, but I feel I need to at least try. Oh yeah, and I hate Mustangs.

I do this to myself, but I can't stop.

:P

Down to 2 Saturn L200s now, I had 4 last month. I stripped and scraped the wrecked parts car and sold my wagon this morning. The rest of the "fleet" is still here.
