Drive it the way its designers imagined it would be driven, and sure, that's what you get!
But Fuelly shows a couple hundred owners of the early 1.6L cars are averaging 27 mpg US, and many owners are averaging mid-high 30's mpg US. Low 40's may not be impossible - half a dozen owners report that.
I agree, the gearing is crazy low. There are solutions to that, too. I predict I would not be embraced on the Miata forums.
And I'm OK with that.
