If you hear something in the news, generally you can safely ignore it. The news produces stories of infrequent and unusual events to entertain their audience. We heard about the Tesla death because it was sensational, not because it's a major problem. The guy who died essentially won the death lottery, and he helped his odds by not paying any attention at all.
We didn't hear about the 1,670 people who died of heart disease on the same day, or the 1,621 who died of cancer, or the 117 that commit suicide every day. There are 100 vehiclular deaths every day in the US, and a Tesla death represents a tiny fraction of the overall fatalities.
In general, Teslas are safer to operate than other vehicles, and in general, EVs are cheaper to operate than comparable combustion engine vehicles.
