This had me Googling "Silica Gel" the most common desiccant and found this:

"The most common desiccant is silica, an otherwise inert, nontoxic, water-insoluble white solid. Tens of thousands of tons are produced annually for this purpose."

No doubt some other desiccants may be terrible, but the most common one, not so much.
