Yea, it's one of those non-literal diagrams based on typologies handed down from previous generations.
Recently I checked out a book on aerodynamics from the public library, a very general book or introductory to the topic; author with the last name of Allen. It's filled with such abstractions but the core of information is still solid if prior knowledge puts it all in context for you.
My personal experience with this was with my hovercraft about eight years ago. Diagrams I had studied for years like a religious text which I had faith in turned out to be misleading and contained only fragments of the truth.
When I tried to emulate these diagrams with my full scale actual hovercraft that's when my real learning happened, hands on as it were.
False Gods no more.
Nothing beats first hand observation and experience.
I wish we all had a wind tunnel in our backyards for this reason,
life would be grand.
