That would have made much more sense, no wonder Toyota/Hino resorts to that approach in their hybrid trucks. And the subsequent generation of full-size GM hybrid trucks and SUVs ended up resorting to that "two-mode" hybrid setup co-developed with Mercedes-Benz and Chrysler instead of the BAS-Hybrid.

Even though it's been quite over-rated at the time, I honestly believe a similar BAS-Hybrid setup is not so unlikely to become mainstream in the next 10 or 15 years at least in the cheaper penalty-boxes.
