I installed a 750W tank style coolant heater when I first got my TDI six years ago. I recently installed a 150W 4"x5" stick-on oil pan heater ala "donkey" on this site. I use two extension cords and plug in both when I wake up to get ready for the day. When I left the garage last week I noticed more heat in the engine bay than I was used to with just the coolant heater. It is not very scientific but I feel like I am getting up to full operating temperature quicker on the road by heating both the head and heater core (coolant heater) and oil in the pan ( stick-on heater). In a diesel mpg is not good when cold and you don't get much heat in the cabin so for hypermilers, more heat at the start of the trips really helps out the trip mpg average. I cleaned the pan and used a little RTV aroung the edges off the heating pad. Super easy and inexpensive mod and I think it will hold up just fine.
