I don't see any ear protection, but he could be using ear canal bud plugs.
Looks like his helmet was knocked off, adding to the dynamic of the moment.
I was thinking the pressure/sound wave was bouncing off is body to move forward, otherwise the wave would continue in the opposite direction of the projectile.
A slow motion gif or video would be much more telling than this still image.
