It takes longer than 20 seconds to get extremely hot... try several minutes. Also the EGR valve doesn't provide all that much heat with a cold engine. The intake heater will provide very hot air even with a cold engine and it will provide it almost directly into the engine. The current set up has to first warm up the exhaust manifold, and while the engine is sucking this warmer air towards the intake through all of the tubing and filter housing... it also has to warm up that entire structure before it can deliver warm air into the intake manifold. Trust me, this takes several minutes to happen. I've concluded from testing the current set up that I will have a good sized gain from added a heating element just before the intake manifold. They already make such a device and I'll mod it to fit so I get almost instant hot air into my engine.
