My perception with the various generations was that the Civic seemed to get a fair amount bigger and heavier from 5th to 6th to 7th gen, though a quick search reveals the increase wasn't as dramatic as it felt. The 7th gens certainly "feel" like a much bulkier car, not sure if it's from a stiffer chassis or changes to the suspension, or something else entirely. Refined is probably the other side of that coin - a longer wheel base and increased weight would generally improve ride.
