I think the bigger battery plays a role in the higher motor output (same happens in Teslas). Bigger battery allows for more power at the same c-rate. But if the 40kwh battery can be put in the older Leafs like the article suggests may be possible, then a software power increase would be plausible depending on other changes. I kind of doubt Nissan would want to lose new car sales to upgrading batteries in older cars, though, which is a shame considering the rest of the powertrain should far outlast the original batteries.
