The dark top and light body help a lot. I did the same with the paint on my Type III notchback. It visually shrinks the top. White over black would look weird.

I kind of doubt Nissan would want to lose new car sales to upgrading batteries in older cars, though, which is a shame considering the rest of the powertrain should far outlast the original batteries.

Nissan makes battery swaps as difficult as possible
Only guy who does it is Corr and he swaps the cells over to the old enclosure

Our 2015 has 25,000 miles with no sign of battery degradation yet. Knock on wood. It's spent its life in Texas and Georgia (hot ==> bad), but almost all of the charging has been from a 110V wall outlet (possibly helpful). We'll still see over 100 miles of range displayed occasionally.
I think the new Leaf looks like that Lexus version of the Prius. I like it.

We have over 34,000 miles on our 2015 Leaf S, and have all the bars, still.

The newer, higher-capacity Leaf batteries aren't doing great, unfortunately. Note to self: don't buy one of these used. 2016-2017 model year 30 kWh bar losers and capacity losses - My Nissan Leaf Forum
Kinda seems like the increase from 24-30kWh was just a software change and the batteries don't like that extra 25% charge.

More information on the Leaf 30kWh battery shows many owners are at 65% by 20,000 miles. But the bars are dropping toward the point at which Nissan would be on the hook for a warranty replacement at a rate that is more appropriate for a 24kWh pack. So people who paid extra to get a new 2016 when there were deeper dicounts on leftover 2015's seem to have gotten an even lesser dependable battery.

There were quite a few instances of 30kWh packs with bad cells that Nissan was refusing to repair.
