Some dedicated-ethanol cars in Brazil resorted to high-compression pistons in order to achieve that. But actually there were other models with lower compression which ran well on ethanol. BTW one of the engines still regarded as the better suited to ethanol, the Renault-based Ford CHT engine, had a 12:1 compression ratio.
