Guns just aren't legal in the UK (not even air guns) and as such, most bad guys don't carry them or even have access to them. Carrying a firearm (even a replica) carries a minimum 5 year sentence. There are some armed criminals and there are also some armed police officers (Heckler & Koch G36C and Glock 17)
There are a few special armed response vehicles on the streets, to be called on as required, but the normal police officer has a stab vest and a baton.
