The US does waste enormous amounts of food. Some sources say up to 40%, which I can imagine considering how much people throw away just in the course of their meal, let alone what "expires" or never makes it to the supermarket shelf to begin with.

But I guess the problem with losses during transport (either due to damage or just falling out of the truck, which is quite frequent here in Brazil with the grains) are still less frequent there.
