While fuel mileage has gone up to some degree it hasn't really been all that significant. Not when it is possible to get around 200 mpg. See Eagle-Research"s "Why 200 MPG is Possible".
We all know that gasoline is composed of multiple fuels from 1 hydrocarbon in the chain up to xxx hydrocarbons in the chain. The problem with truely vaporizing gas is vapor lock. Cracking gas to the 1 hydrocarbon gas give you a 10:1 exchange. But that fuel is inefficient in a low compression engine.
I did once get my old style Pontiac Bonneville up to 13 MGP using a fish tank bubbler in a jug of water/alcohol mix.
