It depends.
My dad got a Jazz Hybrid (Honda Fit) mainly because it is easy to get in and out and easy to operate.
The cargo area is relatively high too, so he does not have to bend over that much when he uses it. for him the Jazz is much more practical than my Insight, which is based on the same frame.

My inlaws have a Suzuki Ignis, again for easy access.
My brother-in-law bought a Qashquai for much the same reasons; added to that, he drives a lot and the higher position means better visibility (active and passive).

All of them used to drive estate cars.
None have any off-road aspirations, real nor pretend.
