Yes, that excessive heat is most likely to irradiate from the exhaust than from the driveshaft.

It might also relate to the space constraints in the tunnel in order to fit both the driveshaft and the exhaust. But anyway, in most FWD cars I used to see some aluminium-faced heat shields surrounding the exhaust pipe when it goes through the tunnel.
