Oh yeah, and to add to the discussion, I can only assume that the heat coming off of the transmission tunnel in the miata is from the exhaust pipe, not the transmission, so even fwd cars COULD have that heat problem. However, I have never felt heat coming from that tunnel in any cars but the miata and S2000. OP, can you feel heat coming from the tunnel?

Yes, that excessive heat is most likely to irradiate from the exhaust than from the driveshaft.

It might also relate to the space constraints in the tunnel in order to fit both the driveshaft and the exhaust. But anyway, in most FWD cars I used to see some aluminium-faced heat shields surrounding the exhaust pipe when it goes through the tunnel.

In my Insight, I have the exhaust entirely covered by coroplast. I have only ever felt the exhaust tunnel get remotely warm when I was pulling a heavy trailer up a mountain in 2nd gear, and even then it was just warm enough to notice.
