You may be socially impaired if facial expression convey nothing of meaning to you.

To say that facial recognition doesn't work is incorrect, as any ability to identify something at a higher rate than chance is "working". Perhaps it doesn't work well enough to your standard, but I find that Facebook's facial recognition software to be extremely accurate. It can identify individuals from low quality photos who aren't looking directly at the camera with a high degree of accuracy.

Sure, it will be tested there too, someday. When building something, you start with the easier problems and work your way towards handling the more difficult ones.
