I remember reading an article from after hurricane Katrina when gas prices went over $3 a gallon and everyone freaked out. The article said that vehicle fuel economy was down at like #7 on new car shoppers concers before gas prices went up and that the gas price surge in gas prices raised the concern for fuel economy to spot #4.
Then when gas prices went back down so did people's concerns for fuel economy.
