The power to weight ratio of electric motors far surpasses that of diesel engines, and their operational range and bidirectional motion allows for far simpler gearboxes.
Frame construction can be simpler without a bulky ICE and radiators etc to deal with. Hub motors remove the need for axles.
Without batteries the vehicle would be way too light to have adequate traction, so scoop in a load of $100/kWh battery packs (as per the newest Gigafactory numbers) for good measure.
