Scanguages are definitely not scientifically reliable for calculating MPG and often require several calibrations with fill-ups, etc to make it more accurate.

For strictly mpg, it's more accurate to just fill-up tank, zero your trip meter, and then at next fill-up, divide total miles by total gals pumped. Simplest & most accurate.
