Carpet or not, this stuff makes a large difference.

I would recommend having something over the sound deadening material especially if you are using the area for cargo. It is a sticky Butyl rubber backed in aluminum (similar to aspht roofing tape) and is not tough in the slightest when it comes to scrapes and gouges.

As a side note, u-seal from home depot, or peel and seal from lows works very well as an under Carpet sound deadener and functions in the exact same way. The roofing tape is much thinner and may require 2 layers to be as effective. I would be a little hesitant on mounting on vertical surfaces because I do not know how well the adhesive will stand up over time. It does work very well on floorboards though!
