They do depreciate, but not nearly as fast as in the US. They are thrifty after all, and gas is extremely expensive: about € 1.80 a liter at highway stations and 1.63 at the cheapest local unmanned stations. That would be about 8 dollar a gallon.
Electricity is taxed as well, but still is way cheaper per mile.
EV's are doing quite well, especially Tesla which outsells all other EV's combined with just the model S and X.
