I feel like both of my parents have always wanted things, but they did not necessarily demonstrate a desire to be happy. The grammar is weird because Dad passed a few years ago.

When I try to do what Mom said she wanted she invariably complains, but I say that people do not know what they want. In "Wild at Heart," John Eldredge says that women do not actually want nice guys, because Mister Rogers and Captain Kangaroo are nice guys. They want Prince Charming.

I believe that people do not even say what they think they want, they give some version of it that spares feelings, is more socially appropriate, or whatever. Do they exaggerate what they feel for effect or perhaps another reason? Who knows?! I cannot even get people to explain why people use punctuation the way they do!
