I don't think 54 mpg vehicles need to be expensive.
The 3rd Gen Insight has no gearbox, just a 1500 cc engine, a pair of clutches, a battery, a motor and a generator.
Nor do you have to adapt your driving style much, most owners do indeed get better than 50 mpg from it.
